In John’s gospel, at a particularly tense and dangerous moment in the gospel’s narrative, Jesus tells those who are gathered around him, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Even earlier, in the opening chapter of the gospel, we hear, “ the Light [sic. Christ] shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). In this session, we will dig deeply into the theme of light and darkness as it is described in the Gospel of John and in the First Letter of John and investigate what “walking in the light” might mean for our own spiritual journey and how it informs the ministry that we share with God’s creatures. We will also consider what gifts can come to us, when we face the “darkness” in our lives.
